Introduction to the Project
J.M. from Dix Hills, Long Island, wanted to bring a fresh, updated look to their hardwood floors. The project covered 632 sq ft of flooring, along with refinishing 16 steps, and replacing 70 sq ft of damaged wood. The goal was to refresh the space with a light, modern look while keeping the floors durable and easy to maintain. To achieve this, J.M. opted for sanding, staining, and refinishing with a stunning Bona Nordic stain.
Sanding and Staining the Floors
The process started with sanding the entire 632 sq ft of hardwood to remove any imperfections and old finishes. Sanding is essential for ensuring the new stain and finish will be applied smoothly and evenly. Once the floor was properly sanded, the next step was staining. J.M. chose the Bona Nordic stain for a light, natural color that would brighten up the space while still allowing the wood’s natural grain to shine through.
Hardwood Floor Refinishing in Dix Hills, Long Island: A Hardwood Floor Renovation Story (Customer: J.M.)
Refinishing and Replacing Damaged Wood
After staining, the floors were refinished with three coats of water-based polyurethane. This type of polyurethane is an excellent choice for protecting hardwood floors. It dries quickly and doesn’t yellow over time, ensuring the floors maintain their vibrant look. The water-based polyurethane also provides a clear protective layer that makes the wood more resistant to scratches, stains, and daily wear.
In addition to refinishing, 70 sq ft of damaged flooring was replaced with new 2-1/4 Red Oak Number 2 hardwood. This high-quality material was chosen to blend seamlessly with the existing wood, restoring the floor’s overall appearance and strength. The project also included refinishing the tops of 16 steps and railings to match the newly renovated floors.
Semi-Gloss Finish for a Sleek Look
For the finishing touch, J.M. chose a semi-gloss finish for the floors. This type of finish offers a perfect balance of shine and durability. The semi-gloss finish gives the floors a polished, sleek look that enhances the wood’s natural beauty while also being practical for high-traffic areas. It reflects light well, making the space appear brighter, while also being easy to clean and maintain.
