Fourth-Floor Walk-Up, Fresh Floors with Radiant Heat
A.P. contacted Wood Flooring Masters with a unique challenge: refinishing 700 sq ft of hardwood flooring in a 2-bedroom, fourth-floor walk-up apartment on Dekalb Avenue in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn—and doing so without damaging the radiant heating system installed beneath the floor.
The goal was to maintain the original color of the wood and simply restore its natural beauty, all while protecting the integrity of the heating system that made their home so comfortable. We were excited to take on the project and deliver stunning results tailored to their specific space.
Sanding with Precision in a Radiant-Heated Home
The first step was to carefully sand the existing floors, working in sections and with adjusted pressure to avoid disrupting the radiant heating coils embedded below the surface. Because traditional sanding machines can generate significant heat and vibration, we used low-impact, professional equipment that ensured safety and efficiency.
From the bedrooms to the living space, our goal was to create a smooth and consistent surface while being mindful of the sensitive infrastructure below.

Natural Finish and Long-Lasting Protection
Once the sanding was complete, we finished the project with three coats of water-based polyurethane—a smart choice for radiant-heated floors. This finish is not only durable and fast-drying but also flexible enough to expand and contract naturally with temperature shifts, which is ideal for heated systems.
By choosing a natural (no-stain) look, A.P. preserved the authentic warmth of the hardwood, allowing the character of the wood grain to stand out beautifully.
Clean Process, Warm Results
Despite the building being a walk-up and the complexity of the heating system, our crew completed the project on time and with minimal disruption. A.P. was thrilled with the transformation—smooth, warm floors that not only looked incredible but functioned perfectly with the radiant heat system intact.
The refinished hardwood brought new life to their Brooklyn home, offering a clean, updated feel without compromising comfort or style.
