Introduction to the Renovation Project
Hardwood floor renovation in the Bronx was the goal for S.P., who wanted to restore the beauty of their 587 sq ft hardwood floors at Pitman Ave., Wakefield, Bronx NY 10466. S.P. reached out to Wood Flooring Masters for sanding and refinishing services to bring their floors back to life. Our team was excited to help transform the space by removing the carpet and refinishing the hardwood beneath to create a fresh, elegant look.
Removing Carpet and Preparing the Wood
The first step in the renovation process was removing the existing carpet, which had covered the floors for some time. Removing carpet is essential for restoring hardwood floors that have been hidden away, as it allows us to prepare the wood for sanding and refinishing. Once the carpet was removed, our team examined the 587 sq ft of hardwood to ensure it was in good condition for refinishing. We also focused on preparing the 13 steps that needed refinishing, carefully sanding and smoothing them to make sure they matched the overall look of the floor.

Sanding for a Smooth Surface
Sanding is an essential part of refinishing because it removes dirt, old finishes, and imperfections. We used specialized sanding equipment to sand the 587 sq ft of floor and the 13 steps. The sanding process helps smooth out the wood, making it perfect for applying the new polyurethane finish. Since no stain or color change was requested, we made sure the natural wood would shine through beautifully. The sanding process also ensured that the wood would absorb the water-based polyurethane evenly, creating a flawless finish.
Refinishing with Water-Based Polyurethane
After sanding, we applied three coats of high-quality water-based polyurethane to the floor and steps. Water-based polyurethane is perfect for refinishing because it dries faster, has low odor, and provides a durable, long-lasting protective coating. The three coats of polyurethane helped enhance the natural beauty of the wood while making the floors resistant to scratches, wear, and moisture. This finish also gave the hardwood a smooth, protective layer that would keep it looking pristine for many years.
