Removing the Old Carpet
The renovation project for A.B. began with the removal of old carpet from the five rooms in their 691 sq ft space in the Flatiron District of Manhattan. Removing the carpet revealed the hardwood floors beneath and allowed us to prepare the surface for sanding, staining and refinishing. The carpet had hidden the natural beauty of the wood, but once it was gone, we could see the potential for a beautiful transformation.
Sanding the Hardwood Floors
Next, we began sanding the exposed hardwood floors. Sanding is an essential step in the refinishing process as it helps to remove any old finishes, stains, or imperfections from the wood. This step also smooths out any rough areas, creating an even surface for the stain and finish to adhere to. We used specialized equipment to sand all 691 sq ft of hardwood, ensuring the floor was perfectly prepared for the next steps in the renovation.

Staining to Match the Existing Look
After sanding, we applied a custom stain to match the existing color of the wood. Staining the hardwood floors brings out the natural grain of the wood and enhances the overall look. The custom stain helped blend the newly refinished floors seamlessly with the rest of the space, keeping the same warm and inviting tone throughout. By matching the stain, we preserved the classic aesthetic while giving the floors a fresh, revitalized appearance.
Polyurethane and Semi-Gloss Finish
To protect the floors and give them a polished, lasting look, we applied three coats of water-based polyurethane. This durable, clear coating creates a strong layer of protection against scratches, spills, and daily wear. The three coats ensured the floors would remain beautiful and resistant to damage. To finish the job, we applied a semi-gloss finish, giving the floors a soft sheen that enhances the natural wood without making it too shiny. The semi-gloss finish provided the perfect balance of protection and aesthetic appeal, making the floors look sleek and well-maintained.
