Custom Refinishing for a Coastal Long Island Home

E.A., a homeowner in the tranquil Wading River area of Long Island, contacted Wood Flooring Masters to bring new life to the floors in their large open-concept home. Spanning 1,300 square feet, the space included a spacious living/kitchen/dining area, along with a small entrance and hallway. The existing hardwood floors had lost their vibrance, and E.A. was ready to give them a fresh, elegant update with a personalized touch.

The goal was to match the warmth of the home’s natural lighting and create a consistent flow between the rooms. With the help of our team, E.A. selected a stain that would best complement the coastal-inspired interior while maintaining a timeless feel.

Sanding, Staining, and a Satin Finish – The Process

Our team began with a full sanding of all 1,300 sq ft, removing old finish layers and evening out the surface. This allowed us to expose the raw wood underneath and prepare it for a smooth, even stain application. E.A. carefully selected a stain that offered a natural warmth while enhancing the wood’s grain—perfect for the relaxed, open aesthetic of the home.

Next, we applied the chosen wood stain, followed by three coats of water-based polyurethane, known for its durability, fast drying time, and low odor—ideal for residential environments. To complete the project, we used a satin finish, offering a soft, contemporary sheen that pairs beautifully with natural light and gives a clean, modern appearance without the harsh glare of gloss.
