Project Overview: Sanding and Refinishing in Manhattan
M.H. from Manhattan reached out to Wood Flooring Masters for a hardwood floor renovation. The project involved 250 sq ft of flooring, where the goal was to achieve a lighter, natural look without any stain. Our team sanded, refinished, and applied three coats of water-based polyurethane to ensure the floor’s durability and aesthetic appeal.
Sanding: Preparing the Hardwood for Refinishing
The first part of the project was sanding the 250 sq ft hardwood floor. Sanding is an essential step in refinishing because it removes the old finish, dirt, and imperfections. Our team used professional-grade equipment to carefully sand the floor, ensuring the surface was smooth and even. This process prepares the floor for refinishing and ensures that the new polyurethane will adhere properly.

Refinishing: Maintaining the Natural Color of the Wood
After sanding, we refinished the floor with a natural finish, meaning no stain was applied. M.H. wanted to maintain the wood’s natural look and achieve a lighter color. The refinishing process restored the wood’s original beauty, enhancing its natural grain and texture. This choice preserved the timeless elegance of the hardwood while achieving the lighter color M.H. desired.
Polyurethane Application: Adding Protection and Gloss
To protect the newly refinished floor, we applied three coats of water-based polyurethane. Polyurethane provides a durable, clear coating that protects the wood from wear, scratches, and spills. The water-based formula dries quickly, leaving a non-yellowing, glossy finish. This final touch not only added protection but also enhanced the wood’s natural beauty, giving the floor a polished, shiny look that will last for years.
