Sanding and Refinishing the Steps
At Wood Flooring Masters, we specialize in hardwood floor sanding and refinishing, and this project in Harlem was no exception. Our client, M.R., wanted to update their hardwood steps, and our team began by sanding the existing wood surfaces. Sanding is essential to remove any old finish, stains, and scratches, providing a smooth, clean foundation for the refinishing process. This step ensures that the steps will look brand new once the final finish is applied.
Replacing the Platform and Steps
For this project, M.R. requested the replacement of 4 steps and the platform. Replacing these components ensured the steps would be safe, functional, and visually appealing. Our team carefully selected high-quality hardwood materials to match the existing flooring and guarantee durability. By choosing the best wood materials, we were able to create steps that blended seamlessly with the rest of the home’s design, while ensuring the integrity and stability of the new steps.

Custom Stain Selection
Once the sanding was completed, M.R. selected a custom stain for the new steps and platform. Staining is a great way to enhance the natural beauty of hardwood while providing a rich, consistent color. This step allowed M.R. to personalize their space, choosing a stain that complemented the overall aesthetic of their home. The right stain not only changes the color of the wood but also adds depth, making the steps more striking and vibrant.
Protective Polyurethane Coating
To finish the project, we applied 3 coats of water-based polyurethane to the steps and platform. Water-based polyurethane is an ideal choice because it dries quickly and has a lower odor, making it more convenient for indoor use. It also provides a durable, long-lasting finish that protects the wood from damage while maintaining its natural beauty. The result is a shiny, smooth surface that is easy to clean and resistant to daily wear and tear.
