Project Overview
B.V.F. from Brooklyn wanted to refresh the hardwood floors in their home, which included the kitchen, two bedrooms, living room, and entry hall area. The total floor size was 540 sq ft. The goal was to restore the natural look of the wood by sanding and refinishing it. With no stain applied, the natural color of the hardwood was preserved. The floors were then coated with three layers of water-based polyurethane and a matte finish for a sleek, protective coating.
Sanding the Hardwood Floors
The first step in the renovation process was sanding the hardwood floors. Sanding is essential for removing old finishes, dirt, and imperfections, leaving a smooth, even surface. This process ensures that the new finish adheres properly. Since B.V.F. wanted to preserve the natural look of the wood, the sanding process revealed the wood’s raw beauty, ready for refinishing. Sanding also prepared the floors to ensure that the polyurethane finish would be applied evenly across the 540 sq ft.
Hardwood Sanding and Refinishing in Brooklyn: A Renovation Story (Customer: B.V.F.)
Refinishing with Water-Based Polyurethane
After sanding, three coats of water-based polyurethane were applied to the hardwood floors. Water-based polyurethane is a popular choice because it dries quickly and provides a protective layer that doesn’t yellow over time. This finish is also more environmentally friendly and gives a durable, long-lasting protection against everyday wear, spills, and scratches. It is ideal for homes with active lifestyles.
Matte Finish for a Subtle Look
To complete the refinishing process, a matte finish was applied. A matte finish provides a low-sheen look, offering a natural and understated finish. It helps maintain the wood’s natural appearance while providing an added layer of protection. The matte finish is perfect for B.V.F.’s preference for a sleek, contemporary look without the shiny appearance that a high-gloss finish might provide.
