Introduction to the Project
C.M. from Manhattan Valley, NY, decided to renovate their hardwood floors to bring back their natural beauty. The project focused on sanding and refinishing a 36 sq ft hallway. The goal was to restore the wood’s original look without changing its color, making the space feel fresh and polished while maintaining its natural charm.
Sanding and Refinishing the Hallway
The first step in the renovation was sanding the hallway floor. Sanding removes any old finishes, dirt, and imperfections to prepare the surface for refinishing. It also ensures a smooth and even base for the new finish to adhere to. After sanding, the next step was to apply the refinishing process, which brought the floor back to life with a beautiful, natural finish.

Applying Water-Based Polyurethane
To protect the wood and enhance its natural beauty, three coats of water-based polyurethane were applied. Water-based polyurethane is known for its durability, fast drying time, and clear finish. Unlike oil-based finishes, water-based polyurethane doesn’t yellow over time, ensuring that the wood’s color remains vibrant. The three coats added an extra layer of protection to the hardwood, helping it withstand daily use while maintaining its beautiful appearance.
Choosing a Satin Finish
For C.M.’s project, a satin finish was selected to give the floor a soft, polished look. Satin finishes offer a subtle shine that enhances the wood’s natural grain without being too glossy. This finish is perfect for high-traffic areas like hallways, as it is durable and easy to maintain. It also helps to reduce the visibility of dust and scratches, making the floor look great with minimal effort.
