Reviving Hardwood Floors in East Elmhurst
Hardwood floor refinishing can breathe new life into any room, and that’s exactly what R.T. wanted for their home in East Elmhurst, NY. With over 520 sq ft of hardwood flooring to restore, R.T. turned to Wood Flooring Masters for professional sanding, staining, and refinishing. The goal was to make their wood floors look brand new, and we were excited to take on the project.
Sanding and Repairing: A Fresh Start
To begin the renovation, we removed 80 sq ft of old tile, which allowed us to replace the flooring with new 3-1/4″ White Oak Select hardwood. The next step was to repair 120 sq ft of damaged flooring. These areas needed extra attention to ensure the new surface would be smooth and flawless. After the repairs, we proceeded with sanding the existing hardwood floors to remove any imperfections and prepare them for the stain.
Sanding is a crucial part of the refinishing process as it evens out the wood’s surface and makes the stain application smoother. With the floor now completely sanded and prepped, it was ready for the stain and polyurethane finishes.

Staining the Wood Floors: Customizing the Look
R.T. selected a custom stain for the new White Oak Select hardwood, which enhanced the wood’s natural beauty while matching their home’s aesthetic. Staining the wood allows the natural grain patterns to shine through, adding warmth and character to the space. Staining also makes the wood more durable by providing a protective layer.
Once the stain was applied and dried, we moved on to the final step of the refinishing process—adding a water-based polyurethane finish. This finish not only enhances the look of the wood but also protects it from wear and tear, ensuring that R.T.’s floors would remain beautiful for years to come.
Polyurethane Finishing: Long-lasting Protection
To ensure that R.T.’s newly refinished hardwood floors would stay in top condition, we applied 3 coats of water-based polyurethane. This protective layer is essential for preventing scratches, scuffs, and damage from moisture, making it ideal for high-traffic areas. The water-based polyurethane finish dries clear and enhances the natural look of the wood without altering its color.
The final result was stunning! The floors were not only protected but also transformed into a striking feature of R.T.’s home. The combination of sanding, staining, and refinishing gave the floors a fresh, modern appearance that perfectly suited the home’s style.
