Sanding the Hardwood Floors
Our flooring team began S.T.’s project in Brookhaven, PA with professional-grade sanding across 750 sq ft of hardwood flooring, plus 12 steps with risers. Sanding is essential to remove the old finish, smooth out the wood, and prepare it for a new protective coating. We used precise sanding tools and techniques to avoid dust and ensure the hardwood surface was flawless before moving on to the next stage.
Natural Stain for Timeless Beauty
For this project, S.T. opted for a natural stain. A natural stain (color change) is often ideal for homeowners who want to enhance the inherent beauty of the wood by highlighting its unique grain patterns and textures. This type of finish maintains the warmth and character of the natural wood, creating an inviting and timeless aesthetic that complements various interior styles.

Application of Water-Based Polyurethane
With the sanding complete, our next step was to apply the stain and water-based polyurethane to protect the floors. For S.T., we applied three coats, a popular choice because of its durability, quick-drying properties, and low VOC emissions. Water-based polyurethane also adds a subtle, elegant sheen to the hardwood, enhancing its beauty without a heavy, artificial gloss. Each coat added an extra layer of protection, ensuring that the floors are resilient against daily wear and tear.
Refinishing the Steps and Final Setup
The final stage of the project included refinishing 12 steps and risers to match the floors. We carefully applied the same stain and water-based polyurethane for consistency in both appearance and protection. Once the refinishing was complete, the result was a stunning hardwood transformation that brought S.T.’s home in Philadelphia back to life.
